Gardening as Theater (1 of 9)

Gardening as Theater (1 of 9): High color at a Summer theater. Many years ago, a "barn" theater, where the theater itself had been the barn, and the restaurant was the (greatly-expanded) ground floor of the farmhouse—called Louis in to reorganize the grounds so that the theater and the restaurant (which were almost 300 hundred feet apart) handled the theater and restaurant crowds better. Part of Louis's solution was a 260-foot arbor down the spine of the property, with the restaurant at the back end, the road at the front, and the theater just off the arbor, towards the road. This was the first of a career's worth of "immense Summer borders," seen here in full August glory.
